The text tells us that there is something essentially perverse about the metamorphoses we witness. For example, some of the elements of the description of the first metamorphosis seem to suggest that it could be seen as an infernal parody of the Incarnation – lines 69 and lines 70–72. Even the name ‘Agnel’ could be seen to recall the figure of Christ, the ‘lamb (agnel) of God’. In this infernal parody of the Incarnation, human nature is not bound to the divine (as it could be, for Dante, if human beings loved God and each other) but to the bestial (as it is, for Dante, if human beings turn against each other for the acquisition of earthly things). So, while Dante- poetaboasts about his poetic skill, he also wishes to warn his readers not to be so seduced by the virtuosity of his poetry as to neglect the moral message the text wishes to convey. Lucifer also has three faces and three mouths, each one slowly gnawing on Brutus, Cassius, and Judas. Similar to the giants, Lucifer is unable to communicate with Dante and Virgil because his mouth is occupied. In earlier cantos, Dante and Virgil speak openly with sinners about their sins and punishments — or, at the very least, sinners are able to cry out in pain and agony. Other interpretations of evil gods in hell and the underworld mirror these scenes of suffering. In so many interpretations of the underworld, hell is like a slaughterhouse.The 14th-century poem "Inferno," written by Dante Alighieri as part of his " Divine Comedy", recounts a fictional journey through the seven circles that make up hell before the protagonist comes face to face with Satan himself. Dante describes Satan with "two mighty wings, such as befitting were so great a bird; sails of the sea I never saw so large. No feathers had they, but as of a bat." ( Canto 34: 49-51).

It is a very significant canto within the context of the Commediaas a whole, focusing, as no other canto of the poem so extensively does, on that which for Dante was the primary cause for the moral degeneration of society: the corruption of the papacy. Bolgia 10 – Falsifiers: The final bolgia of the Eighth Circle, is home to various sorts of falsifiers. A "disease" on society, they are themselves afflicted with different types of afflictions:  horrible diseases, stench, thirst, filth, darkness, and screaming. Some lie prostrate while others run hungering through the pit, tearing others to pieces. Shortly before their arrival in this pit, Virgil indicates that it is approximately noon of Holy Saturday, and he and Dante discuss one of Dante's kinsmen (Geri de Bello) among the Sowers of Discord in the previous ditch. The first category of falsifiers Dante encounters are the Alchemists (Falsifiers of Things). He speaks with two spirits viciously scrubbing and clawing at their leprous scabs: Griffolino d'Arezzo (an alchemist who extracted money from the foolish Alberto da Siena on the promise of teaching him to fly; Alberto's reputed father the Bishop of Siena had Griffolino burned at the stake) and Capocchio (burned at the stake at Siena in 1293 for practicing alchemy).Richard P.
